🏡 Big Changes to Air Source Heat Pump Planning Rules – What You Need to Know

If you’ve been thinking about installing an air source heat pump at your home but felt restricted by planning rules or a lack of space, there’s good news. From 1st June 2025, the UK Government introduced a number of changes to make the switch to low-carbon heating easier for homeowners.

🚫 1-Metre Boundary Rule Removed

Previously, air source heat pumps had to be installed at least one metre away from any property boundary. This often created problems for homes with small gardens, especially terraces or townhouses. As of June, this rule has been scrapped — meaning it’s now much simpler to install a unit without applying for planning permission.

📏 Larger Units Now Permitted

The maximum allowable size for a heat pump has been increased from 0.6m³ to 1.5m³. Many modern heat pumps are slightly larger but also quieter and more efficient. This change means more models are now eligible for installation without requiring special approval.

🏠 Two Units Allowed for Detached Homes

If you live in a detached property, you can now install two air source heat pump units under permitted development rules. This is especially useful for larger homes or systems that require more heating capacity.

💷 Funding Reassurance – Scheme Support Continues

To support the transition, the Government has committed an additional £30 million in funding to the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS). This boost gives reassurance that the scheme will continue into the future, helping more homeowners take advantage of low-carbon heating options.
