Heat Recovery Unit for batch water heating

Litecast of Nuneaton have developed a new purpose built floor bean mould factory to be the lowest carbon facility of its kind, built by A & H construction. Hex designed and installed a totally bespoke GSHP system for the mould bed heating and to heat the concrete batch water to reduce additives and cement content saving thousands of pounds in material costs alone. The ground array is a horizontal array system which was positioned underneath the landscaping bund. A full cut and cover approach with a flow and return from the loop to the building via a multi-circuit manifold. The ground array consists of 36 double stack 6 pipe loops 56 m in length.

The system has been running to heat the mould beds since Christmas 2020 and is working exactly as designed and operating with very high efficiency. The heat pumps are arranged as 4 Mastertherm heat pump units in master and slave and a Mastertherm high temperature heat recovery unit extracting energy from the buffer tank to heat a batch tank over night to 65°C in readiness for the following day of casting. The aim of Litecast is to make the new Nuneaton factory an exemplary low carbon example of what is traditionally a high carbon intensity industry and the team at Hex are proud to have been involved in the project.
